The Kiwis starred throughout all three days of competition at the Australian Youth Cup championships, forging such a strong point-score lead within just the first day’s racing that the Australian states were left in a desperate game of catch-up.
New Zealand won medals in all boat sizes and from both their men’s and womens teams to win the Youth Cup with 121 points – a staggering 39 points ahead of second-placed NSW.
Despite the winning margin, the NSW team fought tremendously to finish second overall, inching out Queensland by just two points.
New Zealand brought a professional aspect to the Youth Cup event, having selected their team early and training consistently. It will be a queue the Australian state competitors will need to follow if the Rusty Robertson Cup is to return to Australian shores.
They may have lost the Cup but NSW certainly regained some pride in the final races of the day. The NSW men’s Eight, stroked by Sydney University Boat Club rower Hamish Playfair, rowed an incredibly race to win a valuable silver medal behind the powering Kiwis. The NSW women’s Eight also battled inexperience and chilly weather to finish a commendable fourth.
Rowing NSW would like to congratulate all Youth Cup athletes for a fantastic regatta and thank all the volunteers, coaches and supporters who made the championships so successful.
